Uses
Transformers are employed for widely varying purposes. For example, a transformer is often used to reduce the voltage of conventional power circuits to operate low-voltage devices and to raise the voltage from electric generators so that electric power can be transmitted over long distances.  
 
Safety Note
For safety reasons, it's recommended to use a Transformer with a maximum wattage at least 50% higher than that of your appliance. For example, a 5,000 Watt transformer can be only be used with an appliance with a maximum wattage of 3,300 Watts, so as to prevent damage from the transformer itself and to the appliance being used.
